Abstract

Chronicles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are marked by a rich tradition which is thought to originate from North-Eastern and Kievan Rus. With time chronicles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania started to develop its own unique features in the field of subject, language and the manner of presenting the material. In spite of the common origins and similarity of content, the relics can be ranked among three versions: the short, extended and full. The common part of all three versions is “Letopisiec velikih knazey litovskih”. Each version is characterized by different ideological overtones connected with the place of its origin. The language of the relics, apart from all-Rus and Old Slavic features, has also elements typical of West-Rus and Polish phonetics.
