Abstract

The article is devoted to the phonetic tools of linguistic stylisation that appear in one of the most popular Polish comedy TV series, Alternatywy 4 (4 Alternative Street), directed by Stanisław Bareja in 1983. The empirical material was obtained using the auditive method. The author shows that the film dialogues are dominated by phonetic realisations which evoke careless colloquial Polish. Moreover, hypercorrect, regional, and “ethnic” forms are used, but their frequency is much lower. Phonetic stylisation serves primarily to achieve comic effects in the series and to increase the impression of authenticity. It also performs additional functions: it indicates the place of action, the intellectual level of some characters, and their ethnic foreignness.
