Studium tragizmu w Chórze Charona Jarosławy Pulinowicz

Abstract

The article contains an analysis of the drama The Choir of Charon by Yaroslava Pulinovich [Хор Харона 2014]. The drama constitutes a study of the contemporary tragedy, in which the actions of gods and inexorable fate are replaced by human struggle with one’s own biological, psychological, and social condition, while the catastrophe results from human determinants – the destructive character traits of the main protagonist rooted in the toxic family relationships and pressures from the collective symbolised by the titular chorus. The tragic element manifests itself in the characters’ fates, dramatic structure, and symbolism of the work, creating a contemporary reinterpretation of the classical tragedy. The application of the key plot elements of the ancient tragedy (hamartia, peripeteia, anagnorisis, pathos) allows us to perceive how Pulinovich reinterprets tragedy from a contemporary perspective, while preserving its universal existential aspects (suffering, lack of freedom, experience of death, search for authenticity, professional and personal unfulfillment).
