Cerkiewnosłowiańskie odpowiedniki polskich form hasłowych w Słowniku polskiej terminologii prawosławnej

Abstract

The subject of the research of this article are Church Slavonic lexemes that are equivalents of Polish entry forms, registered in the Dictionary of Polish Orthodox Terminology (Białystok 2022). Its publication was intended to systematize and standardize the terms used in the liturgy of the Polish Orthodox Church and to enrich the Polish language with terms that existed in the Old Polish language but had been forgotten. Work on over 4,000 Polish‑‑language entries revealed enormous difficulties in selecting individual foreign‑language equivalents. Therefore, the aim of this article is to indicate some linguistic problems that the authors of the Dictionary encountered when creating an index of Church Slavonic entries and to show ways of solving them. Work on the Dictionary has shown that the most important of them include: the lack of Church Slavonic equivalents of entries considered by Orthodox believers as Orthodox, e.g. batiuszka, czotki, odpiewanie; lack of numerical coherence, absence of Church Slavonic equivalents in some terminological categories (e.g. architecture, music, theology, law), lack of unification of Church Slavonic orthography. Therefore, when creating entries and assigning foreign‑‑language equivalents to them, some of the previously adopted assumptions were re‑discussed, some were changed, and new solutions were found for still others, including: graphical and spelling rules applicable in the Dictionary were developed, and the lack of parallelism between Church Slavonic and Polish grammatical forms was allowed.
