Messiasz prawdziwy Joannicjusza Galatowskiego – dialog polemiczny? Uwagi o składni

Abstract

The article becomes a part of a cycle of works concerning the style of the 17th century Orthodox literature in Polish. The analysis embraces an extensive – forming a self-contained whole – fragment of Messiasz prawdziwy by J. Galatowski (Kiiev, 1671): The first part of the discourse. The discussion of the syntactic elements of the style was an attempt to answer the question of generic adjunction of the text: a dialogue between the disciple’s (A JEW) and the teacher’s (A CHRISTIAN) creations, or a religious polemics? Among the features pointing out the polemic (religious) character, one should mention: the evaluative lexis referring to the adversary, his faith and the truthfulness of the propagated theses, negative replies. The didactic character of Messiasz is shown by: the exponents of directiveness, the CHRISTIAN’S privileged position, the verbal signals of the JEW’S creation as a disciple, the arrangements of argumentative expressions. Irrespective of the kind of a dialogue, there are metatext formulas, the arrangement of the whole, the cohesion of the replies, the use of source arguments, source references, translation practice, enumerations and repetitions. Vital remains the question to what extent the print reflects the course of Galatowski’s talks with Jews: a dramatic script or stylization?
