Wnioski | Nie stwierdzono statystycznie istotnych różnic w relacji cen napojów słodzonych do ceny wody między państwami stosującymi podatek cukrowy i niestosującymi go.
Purpose | The aim of the article is to assess the impact of sugar taxes on the relationship between the prices of sugar-sweetened beverages and bottled water as a substitute product. Research method | The study uses a cross-sectional analysis based on a price index calculated as the ratio of the price of a sweetened beverage to the price of water. Data from the World Bank, Global Product Prices, and Numbeo databases were applied. Due to the non-normal distribution of variables, the Mann-Whitney U test was used. Results | The results did not confirm the research hypothesis. No statistically significant differences were found in the ratio of sweetened beverage prices to water prices between countries with and without sugar taxes. This suggests that sugar taxes do not necessarily increase the relative prices of sweetened beverages. A possible explanation is the absorption of part of the tax burden by producers and retailers. Originality / value / implications / recommendations | The originality of the study lies in the use of an international cross-sectional approach and the analysis of relative rather than nominal prices. The findings indicate that the effectiveness of sugar taxes depends not only on their introduction, but also on tax design, market responses, and price relations between substitute products.pl
