Academia et Universitas Vilnensis Societas Jesu was founded by Polish king Stefan Batory on July 7ᵗʰ, 1578. However, it obtained rights to promote doctors utriusque iuris considerably later, in 1641. The University was entitled to grant scientific degrees in philosophy (bachelor and master), theology (bachelor and doctor), civil (Roman) law, canonic law (bachelor and doctor). Like on many other universities, the Vilna Academy was also entitled to grant combined title utriusque iuris of civil and canonic law. Probably Academia Vilnensis granted only title of doctor in canonic law, but not in civil law. Doctors' titles were given primarilyto future professorsof lawteachingin University. They were also given to the Catholic Church officials and to Jesuits, who were teachers of canonic law. The Vilna Academy granted 4076 scientific titles in the years 1583-1781. Among them there were 1810 titles of bachelor in philosophy, 113 titles of bachelor and doctor of canonic law, and 46 titles of doctor and bachelor utriusque iuris. Ifyou comparethese amounts, itisobviousthat Roman law did not play big role in the scientific life in Vilna Academy. The majority of utriusque iuris doctors were priests, only five of them were civil law professors.pl
