Abstract

This year we celebrate 200 years' anniversary of publishing French Civil Code (Code Napoleon). Spanish civil code from 1889 was partially based on French one, although there are substantial differences between them. The article presents the circumstances of passing new law and describes subsequent modifications. Contrary to France and other European countries, in Spain several local civil laws exist. They are based on old Spanish customary laws, having long history. This situation shows thatthe Spanish civil law system is a specific one. This is very well seen if you consider changes of civil law because of European Union regulations.
