Abstract

A book and a stone are designators that have been present in the history of mankind for centuries. The relationship between them has been recorded, among other things, in interdisciplinary studies devoted to the richness and diversity of stones. This relationship is also demonstrated by exquisite bindings, as well as by the covers of ancient and modern books that are inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones. The purpose of this study, however, is to answer the question: how are books and the stones that co-create or form them perceived by the artist who is the author of such individual, unique book-stone publications? The subject of this study, however, is the verbal distinctions of “stone” art books recorded in Eugeniusz Jozefowski’s autothematic-monographic study Book on Books, in which he pays tribute to the stone and stone-inspired books created by him. This is because in the study, which is the subject of lith(h)olinguistic-linguocultural research, the “linguistic data” which highlight the uniqueness of E. Jozefowski’s art books are of great importance. The applied linguistic-culturological method, in turn, makes it possible to expose the linguistic testimonies which verbalise the peculiarities of Jozefowski’s books, the primary component of which is stone. What is also important in this study are chrematonim-ideonyms represented by onimic signatures – titles of individual literary and artistic works. The combination of words and stones, as a result, makes the authorial proposals of the Zielona Góra playwright fit into the current contemporary liberature and art book.
