Abstract

This essay examines the concept of textual determinism in Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, focusing on how the play’s text is shaped by Shakespeare’s Hamlet and how the identity of the titular characters emerges from this intertextual relationship. Shakespeare’s drama is treated as a metaphor for a textual - or intertextual - universe in which individual agency is governed by pre-existing textual realities. Within this framework, Stoppard’s play can be read as an exploration of the experience of determinism, conditioned by the subject’s own perception.
