Abstract

The article describes the problem of biopiracy. The article characterizes the phenomenon and its socio–economic consequences, based on the most popular cases from around the world as well as on the analysis of legal acts regulating this issue. The author analyzes the instruments of both international law and European Union law and indicates the most important concepts contained in them. Referencing the acts described, the author attempts to identify the causes of biopiracy and ways to defeat it. She also indicates how far-reaching the present development of legislation is on access to genetic resources and the traditional knowledge associated with them.
