Abstract

The paper presents the diary by Alexander Turgenev (a Russian historian and journalist; 1784–1845) from the time of his studies at the University of Göttingen (1802–1804). “The Göttingen Diary” was published in “The Turgenev Brothers Archive” (vol. 2, St. Petersburg 1911). The diary is considered from literary (receiver of emotions in a personal diary; M. Czermińska’s methodology) and psychological (basic emotions: satisfaction and joy, fear and anxiety, sorrow, anger, disgust, shame and guilt; W. Łosiak’s and A. Kępiński’s methodology) perspective. “The Göttingen Diary” was not studied previously from the psychological perspective. The paper consists of four parts: 1. Why “the Göttingen”? Why “emotional”? – preliminary recognition. 2. A recipient of emotions. 3. Emotions in reception. 4. The Emotional Era. The Ending. “The Göttingen Diary” is an expression of melancholy and a record of emotional crisis.
