Abstract

On February 24th, 2020, the Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok hosted Jarosław Mikołajewski, a well known poet, reporter, and playwright, a renowned translator of poetry, and an author of delightful books for children. His guest lecture turned out to be the last one before the protracted break caused by the pandemic. In 2019, Jarosław Mikołajewski was awarded the Orpheus Poetry Award named after Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, the author of the famous Zaczarowana dorożka [The Enchanted Droshky] collection of poems. The award was presented at Gałczyński’s Museum in Pranie. Jarosław Mikołajewski lives in Warsaw, where he was born in 1960. He is a poet, but also an essayist, reporter, translator, and – since recently – a playwright. He refrained from publishing his works during the martial law period, so his first collection of poems was published relatively late: A świadkiem śnieg [As Witnessed by the Snow] (Przedświt 1991; the book won the Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna Literary Award for the best poetic debut). As a reporter and essayist, he is mainly interested in the Mediterranean area. This has been reflected in two books. The first one, Wielki przypływ [The High Tide], which received the Beata Pawlak Award for the best documentary book of the year, describes the plight of refugees on Lampedusa. The second book, Terremoto, nominated for the Nike Literary Award, tells about European solidarity in the wake of earthquakes in Italy. Mikołajewski has also published two collections of essays devoted to Italy: Rzymska komedia [The Roman Comedy], nominated for the Nike Award, is composed of a hundred essays about Rome; Syrakuzańskie [Notes from Syracuse] is a collection of essays written during his wandering around Syracuse. An important place in Jarosław Mikołajewski’s oeuvre is occupied by his Cień w cień – za cieniem Zuzanny Ginczanki [Shadow by Shadow. In the Footsteps of Zuzanna Ginczanka], a deeply personal account of his lasting preoccupation with the Polish Jewish author of O centaurach [On Centaurs], who perished in the Holocaust. In his books for children he does not shun difficult topics, such as death (Kiedy kiedyś [Someday, when…]), tolerance (O trzech pierścieniach [The Three Rings]), and love (Kreska i Kropek [Dash and Dot]). Here one should particularly mention Wędrówka Nabu [Nabu’s Wandering], a book about refugees. The main character is a girl from ‘there’ who gets ‘here’ in search for a safe home. Jarosław Mikołajewski is also well known for his translations, especially of poetry. As a translator, he has published collections of poems by Primo Levi, Cesare Pavese, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Sandro Penna, Salvatore Quasimodo, Alda Merini, and Pier Paolo Pasolini; in addition, he has composed two anthologies of Italian twentieth century and contem-porary lyrical poetry. The poet works at the Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature in Warsaw. Jarosław Mikołajewski delivered his lecture, titled Poetry in Translation: The Question of Loyalty, in the afternoon of Monday, February 24th, 2020. The lecture was held as part of the Master Talks series of guest lectures, initiated in 2017. Drawing on his personal experience as a poet and translator of poetry, Mikołajewski offers a critical analysis of the concept of faithfulness in contrast to loyalty – in poetry and translation. He sees faithfulness as a constraint on creativity and loyalty as a noble obligation. In the process of writing, a loyal poet wards off any limiting categories, staying true to himself and to reality (or, to be precise, to the world that has been processed by his personal senses, emotions, and intellect, and which he therefore considers real). A loyal translator knows one thing: that, in his own eyes, he must be ‘all right’ with respect to the author and his text. As long as this condition is fulfilled, the translator no longer needs to justify himself to others, be it readers or literary critics, since his first duty is to the original text and its author. The lecture was illustrated with fragments from Mikołajewski’s work as an author, poet, and translator. After the lecture, he answered questions from the audience. The lecture was attended by students, faculty members, and writers living in Białystok. The meeting concluded with Jarosław Mikołajewski signing his books of poetry.

Le 24 février 2020, le dernier invité spécial – avant la pause pandémique – à la Faculté de philologie de l’Université de Białystok était Jarosław Mikołajewski – un poète bien connu, journaliste, dramaturge, grand traducteur et auteur de livres pour enfants. En 2019, pour son recueil de poèmes Głupie łzy «Des larmes stupides» il a été honoré du Prix de poésie Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński «Orphée», qu’il a récupéré à Pranie, au musée de l’auteur de «La calèche enchantée». Jarosław Mikołajewski (1960) est né et vit à Varsovie. Il est poète, mais aussi essayiste, reporter, traducteur et, depuis récemment, il écrit des drames. Il n’a pas publié pendant la loi martiale, donc son premier volume A świadkiem śnieg «Et le témoin est la neige» a été publié relativement tard (Przedświt 1991, Prix Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna pour le meilleur début de l’année). En tant que journaliste et essayiste, il s’intéresse principalement aux questions méditerranéennes, ce qui a abouti aux livres Wielki przypływ «Grande marée» (Prix Beata Pawlak pour le reportage de l’année), consacré à Lampedusa et aux réfugiés, et Terremoto – sur la solidarité européenne face aux tremblements de terre en Italie (nomination au prix Nike). Les livres Rzymska komedia «Comédie romaine» (nomination au prix Nike) – cent essais sur Rome en dialogue avec la Divine Comédie, et Syrakuzańskie «Syracusiennes» – un reportage d’essai sur les Randonnées à Syracuse – ont un caractère culturel. Une place importante dans l’oeuvre de Jarosław Mikołajewski est Cień w cień – za cieniem Zuzanny Ginczanki «De l’ombre à l’ombre – derrière l’ombre de Zuzanna Ginczanka» – un récit personnel de nombreuses années d’intérêt pour l’auteur du volume O centaurach «À propos des centaures». Dans les livres pour enfants, l’auteur traite de sujets difficiles, comme la mort (Kiedy kiedyś… «Quand un jour…»), la tolérance (O trzech pierścieniach «À propos des trois anneaux»), l’amour (Kreska i Kropek «Barre et Point»). Parmi ces livres, le livre sur les réfugiés Wędrówka Nabu «Le voyage de Nabu», dont le personnage principal est une fille «de là‑bas» à la recherche d’un foyer sûr «ici», occupe une place particulière. Un domaine important du travail de Jarosław Mikołajewski est la traduction, en particulier de la poésie. En tant que traducteur, il a publié, entre autres, les volumes de poèmes de Primo Levi, Cesare Pavese, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Sandro Penna, Salvatore Quasimodo, Alda Merini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, et deux anthologies de poésie italienne – du XXe siècle et de poésie contemporaine. Le poète travaille au musée de la littérature Adam Mickiewicz à Varsovie. Le lundi 24 février 2020 à midi, dans le cadre de la série «Conférences de Maîtres» inaugurée en 2017, Jarosław Mikołajewski a donné une conférence intitulée «Poésie et traduction: la question de la loyauté». Dans un discours très personnel, en tant que poète et traducteur actif, l’auteur analyse de manière critique le concept de fidélité, en le comparant à la loyauté – dans la poésie et les traductions. Il considère la fidélité comme une sorte d’esclavage créatif, la loyauté – comme une noble obligation. Un poète loyal est fidèle à lui‑même et à la réalité (au monde qu’il considère comme réel dans son traitement personnel par les sens, les émotions et l’intellect), repoussant toutes les catégories embarrassantes à l’écriture, un traducteur fidèle sait une chose: qu’il doit être «correct» avec l’auteur et son texte, et seulement en lui‑même, sans justifier auprès des autres, lecteurs et chercheurs, son propre travail pour le bien du texte original et son auteur. Le texte est illustré d’extraits de ses propres travaux d’écriture, de poésie et de traduction. Après la conférence, on a posé des questions à l’invité. Le public de la conférence était composé d’étudiants et d’employés de la Faculté de philologie ainsi que d’écrivains de Białystok. À l’issue de la rencontre, le poète a également signé ses recueils de poésie.
