Abstract

The key issue of the existential philosophy of M. Berdyaev, one of the leading Russian philosophers of the early 20th century was the human being and his/her freedom. The basis of his anthropological reflection was the idea of the image of God in the human as well as the dogma of incarnation. He preached the need for creating “new Middle Ages”, a cultural formation restoring the harmony of the divine element and the human element. He was critical towards rationalism. He saw threat to the spiritual life of the human in modern technological advancement. He considered the issue of war from a few perspectives simultaneously, taking into consideration existential, personalistic, religious and historical dimensions. The following aspects in his views are valuable and worth noting: war has both evil and good points, negative attitude towards the Bolshevik pacifism, prediction of the influence of the development of technology on the rationale of war, awareness of the effect of wars on the spiritual form of the human being, criticism of totalitarian systems and mythologizing of war.
