Skąd się wziął hetman w Ewangelii? O nazwach dostojników w polskich przekładach Ewangelii z XVI wieku

Abstract

The article discusses the vocabulary concerning the names of dignitaries and officials in the Roman Empire and antique Jewish world described in the Gospels. The material base was 8 translations of Gospels from the 16th century. Collecting was simple thanks to the site ewangelie.uw.edu.pl – there are transcriptions of those Gospels. The article contains a discussion on the results of the research on the names from religious material. To conduct better research, in the analyses and comparisons, the Vulgate and the Millenium Bible are used as reference points. The analysis shows that vocabulary varies to some extent. A possible reason for it is that in the Polish language, words naming officials and dignitaries are differential from the oldest times. The material contains 53 words, from which 14 are unique as they occur in one translation and there are 2 neologisms. The majority of the translators made the contents contemporary, which can be seen in the words describing the realia of the translators’ times with reference to the ancient realia, which slighty changed the meanings of the units without a significant change of the context.
