Abstract

This article contains an analysis of formal and linguistic aspects of headlines and ending formulas in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s letters to his wives. The material covers about 600 letters written over 30 years. The main subject of this research is the construction, function and linguistic features of the basic composition structures of a letter, which include expressions used to address the recipient, ending formulas, signatures and postscripts. The graphic side, spelling in dates and place names have also been described. Some significant features of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s writing style as well as the elements of a letter composition outlined above against the letter tradition as a genre have been indicated.
