Rozszerzenia metonimiczne i metaforyczne pojęcia kobieta w powieści Witkacego 622 upadki Bunga, czyli Demoniczna kobieta

Abstract

The paper is a linguistic analysis of metonymic and metaphoric broadenings of the notion of a woman in the novel 622 upadki Bunga czyli Demoniczna kobieta by Witkacy. A methodological basis was provided by the assumptions suggested by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson, treating a metaphor (and thus metonymy) as a process of linguistic conceptualisation of some notions in the lexical structure of others. The analysed material focuses on the metonymy of A WOMAN IS FLESH, which marks the domain of corporeality as a basis of specifying this notion in the analysed text. This domain implies a number of linguistic metaphors which express the notion of a woman in the categories of nature, carnal love, subjection, as well as alienation and demonic nature. In the author’s opinion, these categories, strongly rooted in the culture of the West, continue the image of woman within the framework of the novel.
