Abstract

We do not exist when we do not rebel – the lyrics of the Włochaty countercultural group’s song are a symbolic introduction to the punk output of the 80s. The punk rock contestation is expressed with the language typical of it, using special “writer’s tools”: to avoid censorship, to exist in the specific relation between the creator-recipient of the same pop culture, to express inner opposition to everything. A rebellion in the punk rock song is of a total dimension; it is a rebellion by definition, a constant state of negation of the systemand rejection of all the forms of enslavement. It is the rebellion which leads to freedom. The language of the punk rock songs is not uniform: once it is cropped with metaphors and multidimensional irony, some other time it is extremely simple, without a trace of figurativeness. However, in its characteristic way, it smuggles one of the most important values of its ideology: a rebellion. The ways of its appearance in a song, a close language analysis of selected examples, allow getting to know this esoteric world of the values which have become total.
