Abstract

In modern Polish, the notion of vetting has new semantic components which are prominent in the profiles dependent on different points of view determined by one’s outlook and ideology. 1. In the religious discourse: vetting means purging of a sin. 2. In the liberal and leftist discourse: vetting is an antidemocratic procedure. 3. In the rightist-conservative discourse: vetting is purging the structures of a state from communist agents. 4. In the colloquial discourse: vetting is an act of justice against the evil that was done. A systemic meaning of the lexeme of vetting, classified as the legal-political one in modern dictionaries of general Polish, has undergone a change of meaning in discussions and vetting polemics in recent years almost in all social environments; however, it constitutes a basis on which current layers of meaning have built up. Thus, in different profiles of the notion of vetting, we can see a vivid reaction of contemporary Polish to democratic language manifestations of Poles’ political attitudes towards vetting.
