Abstract

The history of translations of the Holy Scriptures on the Church Slavonic language is very rich and, as it is well known, dates back to the longer time Constantine and Methods pilgrimage, when it began to form the first Slavic translations of the books of the New Testament and selected books of the Old mainly the Psalter. The history of the translation of the whole of Scripture is poorer. Taking into account only the area wschodniosłowiański can mention just four major titles. The first in the order. Bible of Metropolitan Gennadiush of 1499. Monument of the innovative for the time and socio‑political, and this is due to the use by its formation of Latin translations, including of the Vulgate. The layout of the Bible books duplicates also the order of the Vulgate. In 1581 was printed another translation of the Bible. It is known as Ostrog Bible. It is based on the Greek, Latin and other Slavonic (south‑Slavonic) translations of the Holy Scriptures. In 1751 was printed Bible of the Empress Elisabeth. This translation was based on the Ostrog Bible, but was revised to be compatible with Greek translation. In this research I show how it was revised on the example of translation of the Apocalypse of St. John. Both analyzed Church Slavonic translations of Holy Scripture corresponds to the Greek text, except that the translation of the 18th‑century shall submit this fidelity over the beauty and richness of expression in Old Church Slavonic. As you can see, the editors and creators of the new translation by all means tried to approach the text from the 16th century until the Greek text and mainly consisted of their work. It is true that we find here also tend modernize the language, to bring it to the Russian language, because for Russian‑speaking audience it was intended, but this property of the text is not so important as the need to compatible it to the Greek translation.
