Abstract

The images of everyday life recorded in Rutowska’s photographs are the testimony of the culture of scarcity, despite the fact that they were created for the needs of communist propaganda. Deficiency is manifested in very different situations, not only of a consumer nature. The photography also expresses lack of social equality, absence of proper communication with the public and deficiency of attempt of the government to meet citizens’ expectations. Rutowska’s photographs are not only a story about everyday life of Poles in the era of the Polish People’s Republic, they are also a part of the narrative of contemporary everyday life as a point of reference. The sentiment and nostalgia that accompany the viewing of Rutowska’s photographs express not only the longing for what is lost in the past, but they can also represent a kind of disagreement with negative changes in the current political system.
