Abstract

Justinian is one of the most famous lawgivers in world history. On the instruction of this emperor Roman law was codified in the years 528-534. Also created were such works as: the Institutions (Institutiones) from 533 A.D., the Digest (Digesta) from the same year and the Code (Codex repetitae praelectionis) from 534 A.D. The whole of Justinian’s legislation, including his imperial constitutions published after 534 A.D. (Novellae), was collected in a single work – Corpus Iuris Civilis. Today, likenesses of this Byzantine ruler can be seen as architectural adornments in many notable buildings throughout the United States of America. Among others, such buildings include: the Ames-Webster Mansion in Boston; the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr., Courthouse in Baltimore; the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln; the Supreme Court of the United States, the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building and the United States Capitol in Washington; the New York State Supreme Court and the Brooklyn Museum in New York and the Cuyahoga County Courthouse in Cleveland. The paper contains descriptions of selected architectural features manifest in the form of murals, paintings, sculptures, reliefs and woodcarvings, accompanied by relevant information concerning their respective artists.
