Abstract

The fascination of life, traditions and culture of the peoples of the Middle and Far East is ever-present in Russian literature. The image of Constantinople/Istanbul occupies an important place among the many eastern motives. This city gained interesting use, referring to the concept of understanding the East in terms of mystery, mysticism, wisdom, opposites, as well as a destination of cognitive travel and finally a place of wars and political intrigues. Therefore, these perspectives took different faces: from the fascination until the negative evaluation. The poem Constantinople occupies a special place among the various examples of experiments with word-picture of the Russian avant-garde poetry of the early twentieth century, it is one of the most interesting examples of visual poetry from the beginning of the twentieth century.
