Abstract

The paper discusses Miłosz’s desire to describe in poetry vicissitudes of people who used to inhabit the space of his homeland, who are gone, and along with them the climate of life of that old community. The long bygone faces remained just a shadow in the individual memory of the poet who makes efforts to restore them to last by the force of a poetic word. Miłosz defines this attempt as “raising to the second power” (or description in poetry) of that spiritual land of his memory. This intention is combined with a strong autobiographical current present in Miłosz’s work. Hence a certain map of points determining spiritual experiences of the poet in his life journey, making in his poems a network of roads, countries and places experienced at the intersection of reality, myth and imagination.
