Abstract

The article posits that the perception of space in Żeromski’s work results from the whole conceptualisation of reality and art, and the tendencies which occur in descriptions of landscapes manifest themselves in various forms, including the methods of using other motives and means of expression. A ‘vertical’ perception resulting from the writer’s love for mountains, is connect with a ‘fragmentary’ composition of his novel, the nature and vicissitudes of his characters, tendencies to pay attention to exceptional moments, to extraordinary qualities of the characers and uniqueness of their experience. According to the author, space in Żeromski’s work is a mirror of man, his ally and enemy, part of his existence.
