Abstract

The article analyzes several apocryphal novels, where, unlike in the pre-texts, geographical location of protagonists plays a key role. By making such unarbitrary shifts the authors of literary apocrypha either complement the biographies of main characters (Dangerous Liaison or Letters from Daal en Berg by H. S. Haasse – a sequel to Dangerous Liaisons, and Castorp by P. Huelle – a prequel to The Magic Mountain), or they write biographies for those who did not have them in canon works (Gertrude and Claudius by J. Updike and a prequel to Jane Eyre: An Autobigraphy – Wide Sargasso Sea by J. Rhys). Each of these examples gives special importance to geographical location of protagonists.
