Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the semantic value of the number three in selected genres of folk literature, such as medical incantation, courtship song, ballad and fairy tale. Triple repetition is a stylistic and structural procedure. Moreover, it has a magical value. Symbolism of the number three is also present inside the stories. At this level, the number may be interpreted in the context of the traditional world view, and relate to the idea of a tripartite universe, rites of passage, as well as transformation and openness to change.
