Abstrakt: The present book is the second in the three-volume publication Juliusz Słowacki’s Beauty, prepared by the University of Białystok’s scholars in the period from 2009 to 2013. The volumes are dedicated to aesthetics and genealogy of the works of the great Polish Romantic poet, Juliusz Słowacki (1809–1849). It is the result of the work done in the Chair in Philological Studies ‘East – West’ (integral part of the Faculty of Philology), which specializes in comparative studies of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature, particularly in Romanticism, borderland cultures and the legacy of Byzantium. Between 6th and 9th of May 2009, the Chair organized the International Conference, Słowacki’s Beauty, in Białystok. It commemorated the bicentenary of Słowacki’s birth and one hundredth and sixtieth anniversary of his death. So far it has been the greatest conference dedicated to the poet: over one hundred and thirty papers were read, and over two hundred scholars (from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Switzerland, Italy, the USA, Lithuania and France) took part in conference sessions, theatre performances, concerts and sightseeing tours that accompanied the main event. Among the institutions that particularly contributed to the Conference organization were: the National Library in Warsaw, the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Society, the Literary Studies Committee of Polish Academy of Sciences and Książnica Podlaska in Białystok. All the scholarly work and organization were coordinated and supervised by the Faculty of Philology at the University of Białystok. The conference was the focal point of ‘Słowacki’s Year 2009,’ officially declared by the Polish Parliament, and it was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. It took four years to publish the three volumes. They collect a significant number of studies, sketches and materials referring to Romantic aesthetics, particularly the aesthetics of Juliusz Słowacki, a poet who is undeniably the classic of Polish literature. His poetics is informed by a reconciliation of mutually exclusive aesthetic stances and ideas: sentimentalism and classicism; the Gothic style, the frénétique and the sublime; irony, the grotesque and literary evocations of sacrum. Słowacki represents the Romantic strategy of intertextuality, linking in his dramas, lyrical poems, longer poems and letters his inspirations from Shakespeare and Dante, Ariosto and George Sand, Mickiewicz and de Musset, Hugo and Byron, Calderon and Celtic poetry. All these references are well-researched and deliberate, creating an ambiguous and polyphonic poetic world, which is permeated by irony and mysticism as well as history and extreme individualism. Volume III comprises six chapters. Chapter I, Prolegomena – At a Distance, In a Context, includes the texts related to the bicentenary of the poet’s birth and one hundred and sixtieth anniversary of his death in 2009 (Michał Siedlecki, Algis Kaleda), as well as the reception of his oeuvre in the late nineteenth century (Anna Janicka), in Gizela Reicher-Thonowa’s book on Słowacki’s irony (Piotr Oczko) and in contemporary post-colonial studies ( Halina Krukowska). Besides, the reader will find here essays on Słowacki’s use of meta-theatrical aesthetics of Tieck (Janusz Skuczyński) and the Romantic understanding of science (Piotr Sawicki). Chapter II, Creating Beauty, focuses on Słowacki’s letters (Agnieszka Ziołowicz, Agnieszka Markuszewska), the father-figure (Mateusz Skucha), the creations of individualists in poetry (Jakub M. Pawłowski), Kordian’s „sophisticated” form (Jarosław Ławski), the poet’s melancholy (Włodzimierz Szturc, Elżbieta Nowicka), metamorphosis of a „glance” (Anna Jazgarska), and the representations of stars, the sky and the cosmos (Dariusz T. Lebioda). Chapter III, The Poet’s Great Travels, brings the representations and figures of travel, both real and spiritual (Nina Taylor-Terlecka, Grzegorz Leszczyński, Michał Siedlecki and Agnieszka Nietresa-Zatoń). The authors analyze the literary representations of Italy (Joanna Pietrzak-Thébault), Greece (Wanda Amarantidou), the Far East (Daniel Kalinowski), the Mediterranean Sea (Joanna Piórczyńska) and the Holy Land (Dorota Kulczycka). Two papers concentrate on the longer poem in „The Father of the Plague-Stricken in Al-Arīsh” that was inspired by the poet’s journey to Egypt and Palestine (Grzegorz Kowalski; Zofia Ożóg-Winiarska and Jerzy Winiarski). Chapter IV, Mystical Metamorphoses, collects the papers dedicated to the poet’s work from the so-called mystical period (1843-1847), particularly to „aesthetics of genesis” (Jacek Lyszczyna, Emilia Furmanek) and numerous representations: of fire (Magdalena Bajko), of woman (Urszula M. Pilch), and of Napoleon (Swietłana Musijenko). One of the papers considers the poet’s drawings from his sketch-book (Sebastian Kochaniec). Chapter V, „Dramas of a Change,” features the papers on the metamorphosis of genres and the change in the representations of man in Słowacki’s lyrical poetry (Z. Kaźmierczak, K. Biliński) and in his epigrams (M. Burta). Most of the articles in this part of the volume analyze forms of the change in representing the Romantic (K. Marcinkowski, A Kotliński, J. Cyganik, R. Majewska). One of the texts refers to „Słowacki in Morpheus’s arms,” or oneiric motifs in his works (W. Owczarski). Chapter VI, Aporias and Watersheds in Critical Reception, shows the reception of Słowacki’s works in Lithuania, in puppet theatre productions (Justyna Ziora), and during the communist rule in Poland (Łukasz Zabielski). Some of the papers focus the modernist reading of Słowacki (Jolanta Dragańska, Urszula Adamska) and the way of presenting the poet in the periodical for children Płomyk (1917-1939). A significant part of the editorial work for the Volume II and Volume III was facilitated by the Łukasz Górnicki Książnica Podlaska and its director, Jan Leończuk. The present volume was edited by Professor Jarosław Ławski (Head of the Chair in Philological Studies „East – West”), Łukasz Zabielski (PhD), a philologist and historian, and Anna Janicka (PhD), a scholar from the Research Unit for the Late 19th and Early 20th Polish Literature at the University of Białystok.
