Abstract

The problem of home and homelessness, which is particularly important in modern historical, social and cultural processes, is examined on the basis of V. Makanin’s prose of 1990–2010s. The image of home and the problem of its lack are considered in his works of the early period in a traditional manner. In the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods these aspects of writer’s art world are updated in a new way according to changes in the socioeconomic situation. The opposition “home – homelessness” becomes more important and finds new meanings (literal and figurative) in V. Makanin’s prose of 1990–2010s (“Manhole”, “Underground, or A Hero of Our Time”, “Asan”, “Letter A”, “Fright”, “Two Sisters and Kandinsky”, etc.) and is being realized in different types of home.
