Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyse M. Sadler's book An Englishman à la Campagne: Life in Deepest France. Michael Sadler, an Englishman by birth who, for years now, has been tied professionally and through family with France, is the author of a series of books presenting the roots of his fascination with the country on the Seine. The analysed novel is a pretext to formulate a number of reflections concerning common perceptions of representatives of the two nations. Going beyond the frames of stereotype and prejudice, Sadler creates for the reader an opportunity to draw more general and universal conclusions concerning the values of cultural dialogue. The events he encounters are a record of the experience of getting to know oneself in different cultural circumstances and the fulfilment of a dream of another ideal space - the French countryside.
