Łączliwość przymiotnika inteligentny we współczesnej polszczyźnie

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to discuss the collocability of the adjective inteligentny (‘intelligent’) in the modern Polish language. The adjective analyzed belongs to so-called fashionable words. The lexicographic entries of selected dictionaries are analyzed with a view to presenting the meanings and schemata, which are confronted with the collocations realizing the pattern INTELIGENTNY + a NOUN excerpted from press texts and texts of commercial nature. The objective is to determine and discuss the differences between the actual usage of the adjective inteligentny and its lexicographic description in the latest dictionaries of the Polish language. The analysis of the corpus of collected Polish collocations composed of the adjective inteligentny and various types of nouns shows that apart from the schemata included in the dictionaries consulted new collocations, frequently used in modern texts, have been coined. The new combinations, the formation of which mostly result from the nomination needs connected with the development of technology, are discussed and evaluated in terms of usefulness, accuracy and correctness. The model of lexicographic description of the adjective in question, based on the analysis of its actual usage, is also presented.
