Abstract

This article is a suggested interpretation of one aspect of Vladimir Nabokov’s multi-faceted work. The thesis put forward in the introduction to the analysis is that the structure of the novel enables readers to understand the fate of a brilliant chess player as a metaphor of life journey of any artist. This concept has allowed the author of this interpretation to reveal Nabokov’s thoughts in a broad philosophical and literary context and to show that the problem of relations genius – the world around him is an important issue at every age, from the ancient times until the present. According to the author of this article Nabokov’s novel has not only the existential dimension of modernism but also a broader philosophical sense.
