Abstract

Though dependence of linguistic research on the state of methods of investigation is a well-known problem, only lately there started to appear manuals on linguistic methods. The basic methodological terms, such as methodology, method, mode, approach, methodics, procedure, operation, technique, trick are presently used loosely and this hinders advance in effective research. These terms are being analysed and suggestions for their ordering are presented. Further some new methods, such as matrix organisation and presentation of linguistic methods, reversible method and method of lexicographic research of evolution of national mentality are briefly described.
