Abstract

Tom Stanisław Lorentz, Między Warszawą a Wilnem. Pisma rozproszone 1915–1939 (Wydział Filologiczny UwB, Białystok 2022) stanowi krytyczną edycję tekstów profesora – od juweniliów i druków ulotnych, przez recenzje i wywiady, po studia z historii sztuki i sprawozdania konserwatorskie. Publikacja została zainicjowana i opatrzona komentarzem przez córkę autora, prof. Alinę Kowalczykową, a redakcją naukową zajęły się Anna Janicka, Katarzyna Raczkowska i Katarzyna Zimnoch w ramach grantu ministerialnego. Struktura tomu obejmuje wstępy oraz trzy zasadnicze części: Warszawska młodość (do 1929), najobszerniejsze Lata wileńskie (1929–1935 – podzielone na działy dotyczące m.in. Wilna, Trok, dawnej sztuki i turystyki) oraz Warszawa (1936–1939). Całość uzupełniają: bibliografia podmiotowa Lorentza, słownik terminów konserwatorskich oraz indeksy. Stanisław Lorentz, wybitny muzeolog i historyk sztuki (doktorat na UW w 1924 r. o E. Schrögerze), w latach 1929–1935 pełnił funkcję konserwatora zabytków na Wileńszczyźnie i wykładowcy USB. W latach 1936–1982 kierował Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie. Położył ogromne zasługi w ratowaniu polskiego dziedzictwa podczas II wojny światowej oraz w powojennej odbudowie, w tym Zamku Królewskiego w Warszawie.

The volume is a critical edition of scattered texts by Professor Stanisław Lorentz from the period 1915–1939. It includes works ranging from ephemeral prints from the author’s youth, sketches, comments on conducted conservation works, reviews, interviews, popular science articles to extended studies on the history of art, and texts written just after the outbreak of the Second World War. Stanisław Lorentz was an eminent Polish museologist and art historian. He completed his studies in the history of art at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Warsaw. In 1924, he defended his doctoral thesis on the works of Ephraim Schröger. From 1929 to 1935 he worked as an art conservation officer in the Vilnius and Nowogródek provinces. After submitting his resignation from the post, he started to lecture at the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius. In the years 1936–1982 (except for the period of the Second World War) he served as director of the National Museum in Warsaw. During the siege of Warsaw and later during the German occupation, he was actively involved in preserving Polish cultural heritage and the most valuable monuments located in Warsaw. From 1945 to 1951 he served as Head of the Museum and Monuments Protection Directorate. In 1947 he also became a professor at the University of Warsaw. From 1949 he was a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, from 1952 a corresponding member, and from 1964 a regular member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1949 he was chosen as a delegate of the National Council of the Defenders of Peace to the Congress of the Defenders of Peace in Paris. He served as a UNESCO expert on the protection of historical monuments, and was actively involved in the restoration of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The volume consists of the following parts: a short introduction by editors Anna Janicka and Katarzyna Raczkowska, an introduction by Alina Kowalczyko wa – Prof. Lorentz’s daughter, an editorial note by Agnieszka Kuniczuk and three main parts containing texts by Stanisław Lorentz: Warszawska młodość (Youth in Warsaw) (up to 1929), Lata wileńskie (Vilnius Years) (1929–1935), and Warszawa (Warsaw) (1936–1939). The largest part, devoted to Lorentz’s years spent in Vilnius, is divided into the following chapters: Wilno (Vilnius), Troki (Trakai), Okolice (Surroundings), Dawna sztuka wileńska (Old Vilnius Art), Turystyka i wycieczki (Tours and Excursions), Recenzje (Reviews), Varia (Miscellaneous). The publication is supplemented by: Chronological list of Stanisław Lorentz’s works (1915– 1939), Glossary of terms related to art conservation and fine arts, Index of locations, and Index of persons with biographical notes. The initiator of the edition was Professor Alina Kowalczykowa (1936–2022), Professor Lorentz’s daughter, who provided commentaries and footnotes on her Father’s texts. The texts were prepared for publication by: Anna Janicka (University of Białystok), Katarzyna Raczkowska (Emeritus employee of the National Library in Warsaw), and Katarzyna Zimnoch (University of Białystok). The project was coordinated by Anna Janicka under the Regional Excellence Initiative grant of the Ministry of Education and Science, implemented at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Białystok from 2019 to 2023
