Abstract

This article explores the role of movement-both of crowds and individuals, often linked to public transport-in contemporary popular novels set in Łódź during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Particular attention is given to how these representations of movement contribute to the construction of urban space, especially when they depart from the stereotypical portrayal of the modern industrial city as a vast, chaotic, and convulsively dynamic entity, a motif prevalent in novels from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The analysis focuses on selected Polish works published over the past twenty-five years, primarily retro crime fiction and social or historical novels by authors such as Krzysztof Beśka, Katarzyna Bonda, Krzysztof Domaradzki, Andrzej Kwietniewski, Konrad Lewandowski, Mirosław Olszycki Olsensis, and Joanna Ufnalska.
