Inna Europa. Studia o publicystyce „Przeglądu Tygodniowego” (1866–1878)

Abstract

Monografia Anny Janickiej (Kraków 2023) analizuje obraz Europy Środkowej, Wschodniej i Południowej w publicystyce młodych pozytywistów warszawskich związanych z kręgiem "Przeglądu Tygodniowego" w latach 1866–1876 (kampania programowa) oraz w okresie wojny rosyjsko-tureckiej (1877–1878). Autorka, związana z Uniwersytetem w Białymstoku, koncentruje się na ideowym środowisku liberalnych myślicieli, którzy po upadku Powstania Styczniowego zaproponowali program fundamentalnych reform kulturowych w Polsce.

Książka skupia się na mniej znanych aspektach światopoglądu pozytywistów: ich wizji terenów dawnej Rzeczypospolitej wcielonych do Rosji ("ziemie zabrane") oraz na ich spojrzeniu na inne kultury europejskie, zwłaszcza te mało znane na Zachodzie. Badaczka udowadnia, że opisy miast takich jak Ryga, Wilno, Odessa, Kijów czy Lwów zawierają analizę głębokich transformacji kulturowo-cywilizacyjnych, wynikających z rywalizacji i koegzystencji kultur polskiej i rosyjskiej, ale także kształtujących się narodów (Ukraińców, Łotyszy, Litwinów, Białorusinów).

Sytuacja Słowian Południowych stała się dla tej generacji lekcją geopolitycznego realizmu, zmuszającą do refleksji nad wyborem strategicznym dla Polaków. Pozytywiści rozwijali oryginalny styl dziennikarstwa, który miał za zadanie angażować czytelnika emocjonalnie. Omijając surową cenzurę rosyjską, posługiwali się dyskursami zastępczymi, aluzją i językiem ezopowym. Z biegiem czasu i ewolucją sytuacji politycznej narracja opisowo-afektywna ustąpiła miejsca spokojnej analizie geopolityki i realnej polityki. Obraz peryferyjnych prowincji Europy Wschodniej i Bałkanów pełnił funkcję lustra, w którym odbijały się ich własne problemy modernizacyjne i strategiczne dążenia do niepodległości.

Monografia rozpoczyna się Wprowadzeniem: Od retoryki faktu do retoryki afektu i analizy. Dalsze rozdziały poruszają kolejno tematy:

1. "Bodziec do poznania świata" (kręgi cywilizacyjne, przewagi geografii w 1866).

2. "Światy dalekie, terytoria niepokoju" (lekcja bałkańska, interwencja Rosji, wnioski dla Polaków).

3. "Światy bliższe: między Rygą a Odessą" (tereny byłej Rzeczypospolitej, od "naszych" do "nie naszych" terytoriów, reportaże z Rygi i Odessy).

4. "Regiony (nie)dalekie, spotkania bliskie" (perspektywa pozytywistów na kulturę czeską, Białoruś w świetle prac Franciszka Skoryny oraz Kaukaz).

The monograph presents an analysis of the picture of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe in journalistic articles by young Warsaw positivists from the circle of “Przegląd Tygodniowy” in the period of its programme campaign in 1866–1876 and during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. It was a community of liberal thinkers, usually originating from the provinces, who proposed in Warsaw a programme of fundamental reforms in Polish culture after the fall of yet another national uprising against Russia: the January Uprising of 1863–1864. Their programme was analyzed in numerous studies by Polish researchers, also in books and papers published by Dr. habil. Anna Janicka, Professor at the University of Białystok. She holds the position of assistant professor at the Department of Interdisciplinary Philological Studies, University of Białystok. Her scientific interest focuses on Polish literature in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, especially on the school of thought represented by young Warsaw positivists from the circle of “Przegląd Tygodniowy”, the work of Gabriela Zapolska, the topics of women’s emancipation and Polish culture in its relationships with Eastern European cultures. The volumes that she edited as part of her research into the works of positivists include: Pozytywiści warszawscy. “Przegląd Tygodniowy” 1866–1876, series I: Studia, rewizje, konteksty [Białystok 2015]; series II: Świat, Europa, Polska [Białystok 2020]. She published such monographs as: Sprawa Zapolskiej. Skandale i polemiki [Białystok 2013], Tradycja i zmiana. Literackie modele dziewiętnastowieczności: pozytywizm i „obrzeża” [Białystok 2015]. She supervised in 2014–2020 a grant from the National Programme for the Development of Humanities for research into the community of young Warsaw positivists from the circle of “Przegląd Tygodniowy” (1866–1876), a project that led to the publication by her team of an eight-volume critical anthology titled “Przegląd Tygodniowy” 1866–1876. Teksty, analizy, komentarze, series I: Pozytywiści, idee, programy [volumes 1–6], series II: Pozytywiści i świat [volumes 7–8], Białystok 2019–2020. In this monograph, she presents an analysis of rather unknown aspects of the worldview and rhetoric of the Warsaw positivists: their picture of the former territories of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth that were incorporated into Russia (the “annexed territories”), and selected aspects of their view of other European cultures, especially those little known in the west of Europe. The researcher demonstrates that their pictures of such locations as Riga, Vilnius, Odesa, Kiev, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Kamianets-Podilskyi, provincial Żarki, contain not only reflections on the Polish status of those places but also an analysis of their profound cultural and civilization transformation influenced by competition and coexistence of the cultures of Poles and Russians, but also the cultures of nations emerging in the 19th century: the peoples of Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus. The situation of South Slavs taught that generation a lesson in geopolitical realism; as Poles living in a country occupied by foreign invaders, they had to decide whose side were they on: their oppressor, Russia, that gave Bulgarians, Romanians, Serbs and Croatians freedom, or Turkey with the coalition of western powers that were interested in maintaining political status quo in the Balkans. The monograph describes an original style of journalism developed by the Warsaw positivists, intended to initially spark interest, then to lively and affectively involve the reader in the reality described. Controlled by strict Russian censorship, they could not write directly, and used various types of substitute discourse, allusion, Aesopian language. As their generation grew older and the political situation in Europe evolved, they replaced descriptive and affective narration with analytical narration, presenting calm reflections on real politics, geopolitics, European and global culture. Their picture of Eastern European provinces and of the Balkans can be described as a type of mirror that reflected their own problems, principally the problem of a strategy that would lead to Poland’s freedom and independence by modernization of the country. The book begins with an Introduction titled From rhetoric of fact to rhetoric of affect and analysis. Chapter I titled A stimulus to learn the world is dedicated to the following topics discussed in two sections: Circles of civilization: the Warsaw positivists and the world and On advantages of geography: “Przegląd Tygodniowy” in 1866. Chapter II Distant worlds, worrisome territories addresses the problem of situation of the Balkan peoples, their liberation from the Ottoman Empire, Russian intervention in the Balkans and the resultant conclusions for Poles. The topic is analysed in three sections: The Balkan lesson in political realism: “Przegląd Tygodniowy” in 1876, In the pot of South Slavic politics: war and communication, Another perspective: Włodzimierz Spasowicz’s journey to Bulgaria. Chapter III Closer worlds: between Riga and Odesa brings a change in the point of view. The researcher’s interest focuses on regions that belonged to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in various periods of its history and/or were home to large Polish settlements. In the 19th century, all those areas were located within the Russian Empire. An analysis of this topic is given in subsections: Through “our” and “not our” territories: from the regions of the former Commonwealth; Reports from Riga in “Przegląd Tygodniowy” 1866–1876; “1055 versts from Warsaw”. Odesa by the positivists in 1866–1892; From the western borderlands of the Empire. Looking into the interior of the Earth. Chapter IV:(Non)distant regions, close encounters brings a positivist perspective on three cultures: those of Czechia, Belarus (old Russia) in light of the work of Francysk Skaryna, and of the peoples native to the Caucasus region, described in a novel by Jakub Gordon The Caucasus or the Last Days of Shamil.
