Abstract

The article discusses 16th century prints from the printing houses in Zabłudów and selected 18th century Cyrillic prints form the Basilian printing house in Supraśl. The author focused on the language of these historical documents. The issues concerning the state of the living language, so-called common speech, documented in the texts turned out to be extremely interesting. The Zabłudów prints captured common speech” to a small extent in the preface to Евангелїе oyчительное and Псалтырь c Часословцем. The Supraśl prints – Леѯиконъ сирѣчь Словесникъ славенскiи and Собранїе припадковъ краткое – reflected living Belarusian language on various levels: lexis, phonetics, morphology. These texts are an important source which confirms the continuity of development of the Belarusian language, in contrast to the opinion about its decline in the 18th century.
