Abstract

For a writer to be thrown into the deep waters of emigration is a tough and final test of the strength of his or her talent. No Polish writer has been subjected to this test as profoundly and come out of it as victorious as Czeslaw Milosz. Emigration is the spatial, geographical realisation of a certain universal existential situation of an art ist - his or her separation, isolation, and bottomless loneliness, which can turn into a catastrophe or a lever for universal creativity. Exile in the case of a poet like Czeslaw Milosz is a multidimensional figure, beyond politics, homeland, nation, language and culture, and refers to the very core of creativity, its metaphysical core. Poetry is a state of permanent exile and a search for an impossible way back to an unknown homeland.
