Abstract

The author of the text indicates and presents a range of educational opportunities occurring in the analytical category of „borderland”. He perceives and analyzes the challenges and tasks of contemporary education in the context of functioning on the border. The educational potential of the “borderland” category is manifested by supporting rooting processes in the native culture and at the same time in crossing the borders of local culture and its roots, noticing „others” with their history, differences and similarities, as well as realizing the importance of universal values. The article refers to a monograph based on the functioning of Ukrainian classes at the Pedagogical High School No. 2 in Bartoszyce (Poland) in 1956–1970. The author points to the problems of borders, crossing them and creating „borderlands”. He draws attention to their educational value and intercultural competences, which are currently necessary in the face of growing nationalism.
