Abstract

In the years following the first partition, the political life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was dominated by the court party formed by Antoni Tyzenhauz. Attempts to subordinate minor factions to the royalists aroused the resentment of local leaders and magnates, who, as a result of this resentment, often conducted opposition activities. In the Vilna province, such political leaders were the Tyszkiewicz family. At the beginning of Stanislaw Augustus’ reign, they were among the king’s main collaborators at the Vilna Sejmiks. When Antoni Tyzenhauz began to play the role of leader of the royalists, the Tyszkiewiczes also established cooperation with him. In time, however, conflicts began to arise between them, which the king strenuously tried to alleviate. However, despite mutual declarations of willingness to cooperate, in 1777 there was a final break between Tyzenhauz and the Tyszkiewiczes. Translated by Stefan Kubiak
