Abstract

The article deals with the forms of communication of the crown hetmans and regimentaries with the nobility of the Lviv Land. The author’s attention focuses on indirect forms of contact, excluding situations in which the hetman personally participated in the deliberations of noble assemblies. The author dealt with documents of a public nature, created and emblazoned on the books in connection with the Hetman’s performance of his duties. This category includes both documents directly addressed to the nobility (letters, universals, asseverations) and those that concerned individuals in a situation where the publication of such a document was likely (attestations, lawsuits before the Hetman’s court, letters of marque). Outside the area of interest, however, were private documents that were unrelated to the activities of the Hetman’s office. A study of the Lvov municipal books from the years 1587-1603 and 1608-1648 allows us to conclude that the most significant, and simultaneously the most common, form of contact between the hetman and the nobility of the Lviv Land were warning universals, although there were years in the period in question when no document of this kind was entered in the municipal books. Much rarer were universals concerning the Hetman’s judiciary, the issuance of selectmen from royal estates, military enlistments and soldier stations. Assurances, attestations, exemplifications, and letters of marque, drawn up in the Hetman’s chancellery and obliterated by interested parties, were equally rare. Almost completely absent are Hetman’s lists for sejmiks, known from other types of sources, such as nobles’ silva rerum or magnate archives. Translated by Stefan Kubiak
