Taxonomy is a branch of the sciences that is focused on the classification of organisms. A crucial problem for microbial taxonomy is elaboration of a coherent definition of bacterial species. With the aid of Bacillus cereus sensu lato, we discuss the different ideas for this definition and demonstrate the role of ecology and the ecological niche occupied by the bacterium in its evolution. We conclude that direct application of an actual definition of a bacterial species is not always possible.pl
