Abstract

The article discusses the origins of the post-war careers of writers named by the author "the Lithuanians", because they were either born or lived till the end of the war in the territory of historical Lithuania. The author reviews the biographies and writings of three writers: Tadeusz Konwicki, Paweł Jasienica and Eugeniusz Paukszta, who, having suffered hardships, had to put up with their status of being dispossessed in consequence of the decisions of the Yalta Conference pushing the Polish state westward. Despite initial similarities in their personal situations (participation in the resistance movement in the Vilnius region, repatriation), each of them in his own way tried to find his place in the People's Republic of Poland and each of them made different use of his experience of the country of origin. Konwicki in Rojsty severed his ties with his Vilnius past ostentatiously, however, the land of his youth became the leitmotif of his oeuvre. Jasienica frequently wrote about the Jagiellonian era, while being critical about the results of the Polish expansion eastward. Eugeniusz Paukszta in the People's Republic of Poland became a regional writer, finding the equivalent of Lithuania in Warmia and Mazury.
