Stylistyczna polisemia frazeologizmów w ujęciu konfrontatywnym

Abstract

The polysemy of phraseological units is discussed in a contrastive perspective, with a focus on equivalents of the units at issue and description in bilingual lexicographic works. The analysis of selected polysemous phraseologisms and their cross-linguistic equivalents renders it possible to distinguish several groups of L2 equivalents. The first of them consists of absolute equivalents, i.e. L1 polysemous units have polysemous L2 equivalents, which have the same number of identical meanings. The second group comprises partial equivalents, i.e. the basic figurative meaning is idenitical in L1 and L2 units, so that L1 meanings of the units non-existent in L2 can be decoded by L2 users. The third group consists of false equivalents, i.e. units appear in L1 and L2; yet, in each language they have a different meaning. The last group contains zero equivalents, i.e. units do not have idiomatic equivalents in L2, so equivalents may be descriptive expressions or monosemous words. Further research in polysemy of phraseological units may result in the improvement of description of polysemous phraseologisms in bilingual lexicographic works.
