Abstract

On October 28, 2021 at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok, Professor Alina Nowicka­‑Jeżowa from the Warsaw University, a prominent expert in Old Polish literature and the works of Jan Kocha­nowski, who analyses various trends in European and Polish Humanism, delivered a lecture in the series “Lectures by Masters”. The lecture was entitled: In the Footsteps of the Poet from Czarnolas and the Peregrine Muses. It was devoted to the travels of humanists as an important text of culture of the Renaissance period. It presents the ideas that inspired the writers to travel: the sense of community Europa Litterarum and translation, i.e. the intention to translate the heritage of the Ancient era to the native soil, to absorb it, process and integrate with the national culture. The paradigm of the Humanist journey was created by Francesco Petrarka. The peregrinations of transalpine humanists are presented in this context. Firstly, Filip Buonaccorsi Kallimach and Konrad Celtis, whose travels are a part of the neo­‑Platonic concept of life as a route designed by love. Then, the journeys of Polish students, scholars, clergy and poets. The most vivid works were the poetic records of ­peregrinations ­provided by Mikołaj of Hussow and Klemens Janicjusz, who felt the cultural differences between Poland and Italy. A different record of participation in the Europa Litterarum was presented in the poetic works of Jan Kochanowski. The interpretation of his experiences from the journeys to Krakow, Konigsberg, Padua, Rome, Naples, and France is aimed at reconstructing the process of the poet’s education and the forming of his personality, shaping his religious beliefs, philosophical and political convictions, ethical and social attitude, defining the programme and forms of literary works. The deposit of knowledge accumulated during the journeys, including the customs and the ability to navigate conflict areas, allowed Kochanowski to socialize both with Protestant and Catholic circles, and to gain the recognition of the King and the magnates that competed with him after his return to Poland. However, first of all, it allowed him to remain personally independent and to keep his identity of the Sarmatian bard, an educated and inspired poet. Professor Alina Nowicka­‑Jeżowa has been working at the Warsaw University since 1970: first at the Faculty of Polish Language, and then at the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies (currently the Artes Liberales Faculty). At the Faculty of Polish Language she was the Head of the Department of Historical Literature and Culture (1996–2007) and the Team for Literary Studies on the History of Culture of the Old Ages; she performed the function of the Chairperson of the Scientific Council and the Director of the Institute of Polish Literature (1993–1996), the Dean of the Faculty of Polish Language (2002–2006). She was a member of the academic associations: an active member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Warsaw Scientific Society, the Adam Mickiewicz Scientific Society, doctor honoris causa at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.

Le 28 octobre 2021, la conférence du cycle «Conférences des Maîtres» à la Faculté des lettres de l’Université de Białystok a été donnée par la prof. Alina Nowicka­‑Jeżowa de l’Université de Varsovie, spécialiste éminente de l’ancienne littérature polonaise, de œuvre de Jan Kochanowski et de différents courants de l’humanisme européen et polonais. La conférence portait le titre: Sur le chemin du poète de Czarnolas et des muses vagabondes. La conférence a été consacrée aux voyages des humanistes en tant que texte important de la culture de la Renaissance. Elle présente les motifs des voyages: le sens de la communauté de l’Europa Litterarum et la translatio, c’est-à-dire la volonté de transposer l’héritage de l’antiquité sur le territoire natal, son assimilation, accueil et intégration à la culture nationale. Le paradigme du voyage de l’humaniste a été créé par Francesco Petrarca. Sur le fond de ce modèle, sont présentées les pérégrinations des humanistes d’au­‑delà des Alpes. En premier lieu celles de Filippo Buonaccorsi dit Callimachus et de Conrad Celtis, inscrites dans le projet néoplatonicien de la vie en tant que chemin tracé par l’amour. Puis, celles des étudiants, chercheurs, hiérarques et poètes polonais. Les traces littéraires les plus distinctes des pérégrinations sont celles des voyages poétiques de Nicolaus Hussovianus et Klemens Janicki, écrivains qui réagissaient aux différences culturelles entre la République de Pologne et l’Italie. Un témoignage différent de la participation à l’Europa Litterarum a été laissé à travers la poésie de Jan Kochanowski. L’interprétation des expériences acquises lors du voyage à Cracovie, Königsberg, Padoue, Rome et Naples, ainsi que de celui vers la France, tend à reconstruire le processus d’éducation et de formation de la personne du poète, de ses opinions religieuses, philosophiques et politiques, de ses positions éthiques et sociales, de la détermination de son programme et des formes de son œuvre littéraire. Les ressources de connaissances, de mœurs et de capacités d’évoluer dans des terrains conflictuels, rassemblées pendant le voyage, ont permis à Kochanowski, après le retour à son pays, d’évoluer aussi bien dans le milieu protestant que catholique, de gagner l’approbation du roi et des magnats rivaux de celui­‑ci. Surtout, il a su garder son indépendance personnelle et son identité de prophète sarmate, un poète savant et inspiré. La prof. Alina Nowicka­‑Jeżowa est liée à l’Université de Varsovie depuis 1970, où elle a été employée à la Faculté de philologie polonaise, puis à l’Institut des recherches interdisciplinaires (actuellement à la Faculté « Artes Liberales »). À la Faculté de philologie polonaise, Alina Nowicka­‑Jeżowa dirigeait le département de littérature et culture ancienne (1996–2007) et le Groupe de recherche littéraire de l’histoire de la culture des époques anciennes, elle exerçait la fonction de présidente du conseil scientifique et de directrice de l’Institut de littérature polonaise (1993–1996) et de doyenne de la Faculté de philologie polonaise (2002–2006).
