Abstract

Peter Handke (ur. 1942) jest laureatem literackiej Nagrody Nobla 2019. Ten austriacki pisarz i tłumacz znany jest z tego, że nie godzi się na wszechobecne konwenanse i ograniczające normy. Według niego narzędziem ich przekazywania jest język. Dlatego stał się on głównym punktem krytyki Handkego. W wielu swoich pracach ukazuje język jako medium, które nie nadaje się do prawdziwej komunikacji międzyludzkiej. Służy w zasadzie wpajaniu użytkownikom pewnych reguł zachowania, a przede wszystkim sposobów myślenia o otaczającej rzeczywistości. Ze względu na odrzucenie tzw. poprawności politycznej i lekceważenie poglądów propagowanych przez niektóre opiniotwórcze instytucje, Peter Handke spotkał się w latach 90. z krytyką. Z tego powodu autor w wielu swoich pracach odwołuje się do zastanej rzeczywistości i często ją kwestionuje. Tak jest również w wierszu dramatycznym Spacer po wioskach (Über die Dörfer, 1981), w którym zaprezentowany został obraz realiów z początku lat 80. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wizji rzeczywistości sprzed 40 lat zawartej w Spacerze po wioskach. Analizę tekstu austriackiego noblisty poprzedza krótki rys historyczno-społeczny dotyczący najważniejszych tendencji zachodzących w Austrii w przedostatniej dekadzie XX wieku.

Peter Handke (born 1942) is the 2019 Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature. This Austrian writer and translator is known for not accepting the ubiquitous conventions and limiting norms. According to him, the tool for transmitting them is language. Therefore, it became the main point of criticism for Handke. In many of his works he shows language as a medium that is not suitable for real interpersonal communication. It serves basically to inculcate certain rules of behaviour and, above all, manners of thinking about the surrounding reality to its users. Due to the rejection of the so-called political correctness and the disregard of the views propagated by certain opinion-forming institutions, Peter Handke faced particular criticism regarding his person and some works in the 1990s, which was related to the Nobel Prize winner’s attitude towards the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. Therefore, Peter Handke in many of his works refers to the existing reality and often questions it. This is also the case with the dramatic poem Walk about the Villages (Über die Dörfer, 1981), where the picture of the early 1980s in Austria was presented, showing not only what is objectively perceptible, but also containing subjective references to the author’s family situation. The aim of this article is to present the vision of the reality from 40 years ago contained in Walk about the Villages. The analysis of the text of the Austrian Nobel laureate is preceded by a short historical and social outline concerning the most important trends occurring in Austria in the penultimate decade of the 20th century.
