Abstract

The paper aims at emphasising an ambiguous meaning of Postmodernism seen as 1) a literary period, 2) a literary trend and 3) a style of writing. The author reviews the research done in the field. She also presents controversial issues and arguments for existing Postmodernism in Polish contemporary prose (new authors, new generation following the achievements of Western writers, e.g. Gretkowska, Goerke, TulIi). The problem of connections between a literary cycle, short story and a novel was discussed in a relation to Postmodernism as a style, however, it was emphasized that traditional approach to literary genres is impossible. The style is in an opposition to the traditional genre classification. The author referred to the so-called anti-genre idea initiated by Roland Barthes and the concept of destruction of genres. A short analysis of selected literary texts leads to some conclusions. Polish Postmodernist writings have all the features of the style, however, a very "Polish" one is a tendency to quo te and repeat. Polish writers of the period usually refer to realistic and avant-garde novels. Thus intertextuality is the main characteristic of the style in Poland.
