Teksty w pracy nad dawną mapą. Refleksje warsztatowe

Abstract

Celem artykułu jest potwierdzenie tezy, że znaki tekstowe i wszelkie inne teksty związane lub odnoszące się do utworu kartograficznego są źródłem historycznym, które warunkuje wielowątkowe odczytanie jego treści, stanowiąc przy tym niezależny od niego dokument, wpisujący się w świadectwo epoki. Próba potwierdzenia tej tezy wymagała zdefiniowania przedmiotu badań i uporządkowania tekstów wziętych po uwagę. W świetle przyjętych definicji przedmiotem rozważań są różnego rodzaju znaki tekstowe, które współtworzą transkrypcję kartograficzną, teksty formalne i dopełniające informację o przestrzeni zobrazowanej na mapie oraz dokumentacja tekstowa a także teksty, których mapa jest głównym motywem. Tezę potwierdzono, ale okazało się, że spośród wszystkich omawianych rodzajów tekstów największe zainteresowanie badaczy budzą ze znaków tekstowych – nazwy własne, z tekstów formalnych – legendy oraz teksty dopełniające i archiwalia.

The aim of the article is to confirm the proposition that textual marks and any other texts related to or referring to a cartographic work are a historical source, which is a prerequisite for a multi-layered reading of the content of the work, while at the same time constituting an independent document which is part of the testimony of the epoch. An attempt to validate this proposition required the object of study to be defined and the texts taken into consideration to be structured. In the light of the adopted definitions, textual marks of various types are considered, which contribute to cartographic transcription (proper names, common names, abbreviations, letters, numbers, and indices), including formal texts (map title, dedications, information on mathematical bases, and explanations of marks in the legend, as well as all information related to the time and place of preparation or publication, co-authors, publisher and copyright holder as well as to the confirmation of the lawfulness of the publication), texts supplementing the information on the space depicted in the map (placed within the sheet on which the map is printed or on its reverse), textual documentation (all documents created before or during the work on the map, as well as during its distribution), and texts in which the map is the main theme. This proposition has been confirmed; yet, it has turned out that among all the discussed text types, the most interesting are textual marks – proper names, and among formal texts – legends, complementary texts and archives.
