Wizja śmierci i katastrofy w czechowiczowskich tłumaczeniach poezji Pawła Tyczyny

Abstract

Anałysing the early works of Pavlo Tychyna from the collections Clarinets of the Sun, (1918), The Plow (1920) and Instead of Sonnets and Octaves ( 1920), we may conclude that it was not accidental that Josef Czechowicz chose to translate these poems. The poet from Lublin deliberately focused on poetry close to his own original works. Most of his translated works of Pavlo Tychyna provide an excellent example of a catastrophie vision of destruction in relation to civil war. At the beginning it takes a form of fear of the imminent hecatomb, accompanied by ominous descriptions of nature and the poetics of dream. Poems of this type, written at the tum of 1914-1915, appear in the Clarinets of the Sun collection. When translating them, Czechowicz employs figures of sound in order to emphasise their sadness and melancholy. The following poems from The Plow and Instead of Sonnets and Octaves collections gradually take the form of a war chronicie, in which realistic images appear. Their characteristic feature is the motif of searching for a weapon against human bestiality; the motif of the battle of good against evil, light against darkness, God against the devil; the motif of the fate of women and children. Slowly, the colourful and melodious descriptions of nature give way to dark and dramatie scenes from the battlefield. Czechowicz attempts to reflect the author's intentions as well as possible and his translations are very close to the original texts. He introduces slight transformations, seeking to emphasise the mood of the poem and to familiarise the Polish reader with its essence.
