Abstract

Uniqueness of a letter as a type of expression makes us try find in it practical and esthetical features, and to ask how they can coexist it that letter. Every particular text is proper for the communication situation, and its overriding goal is to implement a certain intention of the sender. Functions of the letter manifest in certain speech acts, which are analyzed in the article with reference to the letters of E. Orzeszkowa. Every letter is a compilation of some speech acts, but the overriding goal of the text determines its structure, language, contents and style. Because of the location of the letters between speech and writing, colloquial style is the most frequent, but the wish to give them features specific to belles lettres indicates a need to analyze, apart from the practical function, also their aesthetical function. The analysis of epistolography of E. Orzeszkowa leads to the conclusion that only the sender and his/her intentions determines the choice of the style and its dependence on the particular function
